PROJECT SYNOPSIS

Nyanza proposes to build a 80 000 tonnes per annum Titanium dioxide pigment plant and associated infrastructure(the main plant) in Phase 1F of the Richard’s Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ). The RBIDZ is a state-owned industrial development estate  located in KwaZulu Natal, on the northern coast of South Africa.  The Nyanza site measures a total of 67ha and there is currently a Product Testing and Development Centre on the site.

The National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998 (NEMA), and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations, 2014 (promulgated in terms of NEMA) warrant that listed activities require Environmental Authorisation (EA) from EDTEA and a Waste Management Licence (WML) from the DFFE. A Scoping and EIA (S&EIA) process was required to support applications for an Environmental Authorisation  and a Waste Management License for the main plant.

SRK Consulting (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd (SRK) was appointed by Nyanza as the independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP), to undertake the S&EIA process required in terms of the NEMA and the EIA Regulations, 2014.  The Environmental Impact Report (EIR) together with the Environmental Management Programme (EMPr) and associated specialist studies were submitted to the authorities in support of the EA and WML applications.   Nyanza has since obtained both the Environmental Authorisation and the Waste Management License.

Nyanza has also developed its Environment & Social Management System (ESMS) which sets out processes and practices that will assist Nyanza meet its business goals.
